Lillafüred Hanging Gardens & Lake Hámori
Lake Hámori at a glance
Size & setting: about 1.5 km long between Felsőhámor (Upper Hámor) and Lillafüred.
Why anglers love it: prized trout (a rarity in Hungary). Local eateries often serve fried trout with a 12-spice blend—don’t miss it.
On the water: seasonal rowing boats and pedal boats; in cold winters the frozen surface may allow ice-skating (only when officially permitted and safe).
The Palace Hotel & waterfall
On the lake’s southeast shore rises the four-storey, neo-Renaissance Palace Hotel, its main façade facing the water and the southern side opening toward the Szinva Valley. Just steps away you’ll hear the Szinva Waterfall rumbling—an iconic photo stop.
Hanging Gardens (Függőkert)
Below the hotel, steep terraced gardens with stone walls, arches and lookout nooks create a gently medieval mood. Meander down through flowerbeds and viewpoints to the lakeside—golden at sunset, lush in summer, fairytale in winter.
Romantic ideas
Hand-in-hand lakeside loop + coffee with a palace view
Photo pause at the waterfall, then a slow wander through the terraces
Boat on the lake, then a trout dinner for two
Good to know
Footwear: comfy trainers; some paths are stepped or sloped.
Fishing: bring/arrange a valid permit; check local rules and seasons.
Winter: skate only when the lake is officially open and marked safe.
Crowds: early morning or late afternoon = softer light, fewer people.
Make it a perfect half-day
Pair the gardens and lake with the Lillafüred Chairlift to Jávorhegy or a cave visit (Anna or Szent István). Spa lovers can add the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath to round things off.
