Diósgyőr Castle and Knights' Tournament Square

Located in the foothills of the Bükk Mountains, surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, Diósgyőr Castle was originally built as a conquest fortress. It reached its greatest splendour during the reign of King Louis the Great, becoming one of Central Europe’s most magnificent fortresses.

After the king’s death, the castle became royal property, serving as the residence of six queens until the Battle of Mohács (1526). Among them was Queen Beatrix, wife of King Matthias, who received the castle as a wedding gift—which is why it became known as “the queens’ wedding dress.”

During their reign, Matthias and Beatrix of Aragon continued to embellish the castle in the Renaissance style. The last royal resident was Maria of Habsburg, wife of King Louis II (1516–1526), and the second queen of the Habsburg dynasty to own it.

Please note:

The castle is currently closed for reconstruction, but it’s still worth a visit—you can walk around the exterior and admire what was once a queen’s wedding gift.

Next door, the Knights’ Tournament Square hosts concerts, theatre performances, festivals, and historical reenactments all year round—making Diósgyőr a lively destination even while the castle is under renovation.
